Protesters changing "Libya! Libya!" called on authorities to expedite their investigation into the disaster, for the UN to set up an office in Derna, for the urgent reconstruction of the city and for compensation for those affected by the flood.
The Mediterranean coastal city of Derna was hit by huge flash floods, likened to a tsunami by witnesses, after two upstream dams burst as torrential rains from Storm Daniel battered the region. The floods have left nearly 4,000 people dead, thousands more missing and at least 30,000 Libyans homeless.

Authorities in the Libyan city of Derna have been buring the dead in mass graves. The official death toll stands at over 5 thousand, but that number is expected to rise substantially with over 9 thousand people still missing. UN agencies meanwhile say most of the deaths in Libya could have been avoided if early warning and emergency management systems had functioned properly. FRANCE 24's Oliver Farry reports.
