The United Nations Support Mission in Libya warned Monday that an outbreak of diseases in the country's northeast, where floods have killed over 11,000 people, could create “a second devastating crisis”. The floods have also raised concerns about the ancient ruins of Ceyrene with UNESCO saying on Monday the ancient Greco-Roman city lies roughly 37 miles east of Derna.

The Mediterranean coastal city of Derna was hit by huge flash floods, likened to a tsunami by witnesses, after two upstream dams burst as torrential rains from Storm Daniel battered the region. The floods have left nearly 4,000 people dead, thousands more missing and at least 30,000 Libyans homeless.
Devastating floods in Libya have exposed previously hidden archaeological structures in an ancient Greek city near Derna, prompting calls for preservation and restoration efforts.
Hundreds of Libyans gather outside the grand mosque in the devastated city of Derna, protesting against the response by the authorities to the destruction that ensued after flash floods hit the city. On 10 September, two dams burst and unleashed a torrent that submerged parts of the city. More than 3,000 people were killed and thousands are missing.
Protesters changing "Libya! Libya!" called on authorities to expedite their investigation into the disaster, for the UN to set up an office in Derna, for the urgent reconstruction of the city and for compensation for those affected by the flood.
