Italy's largest mafia trial in more than 30 years opened Wednesday involving more than 350 alleged members and associates of the feared 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate. The so-called "maxi-trial", held in a specially converted courtroom in the southern Calabrian town of Lamezia Terme, is expected to run for at least a year.
The defendants had been charged with crimes that include drug and arms trafficking, extortion and mafia association, a term in Italy’s penal code for members of organized crime groups. Others were charged with acting in complicity with the ’ndrangheta without actually being a member.
It's the largest trial of organised crime to be held in Italy since that of the Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra at the end of the 1980s. The Calabrian mafia 'Ndrangheta, one of the most powerful in the world, went on trial in the beginning of 2021. Some 70 convictions were handed down in November, with 355 defendants still to be judged. Our correspondent Louise Malnoy met the protagonists in this so-called "maxi-trial" in which many southern Italians are placing their hopes.
