Palestinians in Gaza are recycling smashed concrete from bombarded sites and turning it into construction material in an effort to rebuild the coastal Gaza Strip. Residents gather smashed concrete pieces and rubble left following the destruction caused by Israeli airstrikes and move them to a stone breaker that then turns the rubble into the gravel and sequentially into bricks.
In Gaza, 80% of the population has no access to clean drinking water. If nothing is done, the situation will become intolerable by 2020. The race is on to build a vast sewage treatment plant.
Images taken from the Israeli border show smoke rising over the central Gaza Strip following a strike. The Israeli army has said it is evacuating about 100,000 people from eastern Rafah, ahead of an expected ground assault in the southern Gazan city. The evacuations come after reports that 16 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Rafah, hours after Hamas rockets had killed three Israeli soldiers on Sunday May 5. IMAGES
