Spain's La Rioja launches application that acts as "guardian" of 200,000 pilgrims

Logroño, Jul 21 (EFE).- Spanish authorities presented a new function on the “Alertcops” mobile application called “Camino de Santiago Public Guardian”, which will allow approximately 200,000 pilgrims of the Jacobean Route who pass through the Spanish city of La Rioja every year, to share their location with a police center so that, in a emergency, police could assist and have access to their location. Major fire in Spain forces evacuation of more than 1,000 people

More than 1,000 people have been evacuated in the Spanish regions of Valencia (south-east) and Aragon (north-east) where forest fires have already burnt some 900 hectares, according to local authorities. Four hundred firefighters, rescue workers and military personnel, fifteen planes, seaplanes and helicopters worked to extinguish the flames, according to the Valencia rescue service. A nearby field hospital was set up and the Red Cross opened a reception centre for evacuees in a gymnasium in the town of Segorbe.
