Iquique, Oct 2 (EFE).- People in large numbers held pro and anti-migration rallies in Chile Saturday amid a crisis sparked by the entry of thousands of undocumented immigrants, triggering tension between locals and foreigners.Holding Chilean flags and saucepans, hundreds of people protested against the entry of irregular migrants into Iquique, 1,700 km north of the capital.Hundreds of foreigners have been camping for weeks in the port city. Iquique, Sep 24 (EFE).- The Chilean Carabineros police force vacated Friday the tents of a migrant camp in the Plaza Brazil in the northern city of Iquique, where a hundred of migrants had been camping out for months as a result of the migratory crisis in this area.During the eviction, there were some confrontations between the migrants and the police agents, as well as between the campers and the residents of the city, who were against their continued presence in the area because of unsanitary conditions. Hundreds of migrants are stranded in the small Chilean town of Colchane, on the border with Bolivia, and thousands in the nearest city, Iquique, after entering the country through clandestine border crossings. Irun, Aug 9 (EFE).- Hundreds of people gathered on Monday in the Gipuzkoa municipality of Irun, northern Spain, to mourn the death of a migrant who drowned while trying to cross the Bidasoa river into France.The demonstrators also called for immigration policies that could end such tragedies.The waters of the Bidasoa River, which acts as the natural border between Spain and France, claimed the life of another migrant who was trying to access French territory this Sunday. Santiago, Oct 25 (EFE/EPA).- Chileans decided Sunday by an overwhelming majority to replace their controversial constitution drafted during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, which caused the violent mass protests of October 2019.Seventy-eight percent of Chileans approved the move with 87 percent of votes counted. They also voted by 79 percent – according to the country’s polling authorities – for the new charter to be drafted via constitutional convention, comprising citizens solely elected for that purpose.
