If you're unlucky enough to need a bed in an intensive care unit for COVID-19, cross your fingers that you'll get a bed at the right time. That's because ICU patients treated during periods of increased demand are almost twice as likely to die compared to those treated in low-demand periods. UPI reports intensive care units operating at 75% to 100% capacity were classified as 'high demand.' 'Low demand' was classified at less than 25% of capacity. The study showed patients in ICUs operating at high demand had a 94% higher risk for death compared to those in facilities operating at low demand. Hospitals in many parts of the country have reported being overwhelmed with patients requiring ICU treatment during the pandemic. Research suggests up to 30% of COVID-19 patients require treatment in the ICU, with many needing mechanical ventilator support to breathe.
On Saturday, GOP Rep-Elect Bob Good of Virginia labeled the coronavirus pandemic as "phony." Good made the remarks at a rally in support of President Donald Trump in Washington, DC. Business Insider reports he told the crowd they looked like a group of people that get that this is a phony pandemic." "It's a serious virus, but it's a virus. It's not a pandemic ... You get it. You stand up against tyranny." Just a day earlier, the US had roughly 231,000 new coronavirus infections and over 3,300 COVID-19 deaths. Both of those are record numbers for the country, according to the latest data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
If life in the US is just getting a bit too much, retiring abroad can be a viable option. However, as Medicare isn't available overseas, it's critical to investigate the quality, variety, affordability, and availability of health care in your chosen location. Also, Business Insider reports it's best to first rent a home, not buy it. After all, you may love the city you're in, but a particular neighborhood might not work as well. According to Business Insider, if living abroad full-time is a bit daunting, consider taking long trips there, instead. After all, you can always come back--or try a different country. Finally, make a plan for the distant future. What are the options if you or your partner dies or becomes disabled? Or adorable grandchildren make their debut?
The road to the Oval Office is fraught with peril and stained with blood, sweat, and tears. But once there, the US President makes out reasonably well. According to Business Insider, the president earns an annual salary of $400,000, as well as unlimited access to Air Force One, Marine One, and Camp David. He and his family are also looked after by over 100 White House staffers, including top-flight pastry chefs, maids, landscapers, plumbers, and a head housekeeper. While the president is never really 'off,' he and his family can relax and watch movies in the White House media room, and work off steam in a number of sports areas. Finally, US presidents get free healthcare and a generous $200,000 annual pension--for life!
