Lexus’ Strategy For An Electrified Future

Description

With the new NX, Lexus is opening a new chapter in the history of the Japanese premium automobile brand: The second generation of the SUV model features a further developed body design and is driving electrification further with the first plug-in hybrid from Lexus and the latest hybrid generation Ahead. At the same time, the new NX offers driving dynamics improvements for an active and networked driving experience, multimedia and connectivity of the next generation as well as new technologies for more safety and comfort. The new NX replaces a model that has been very successful for Lexus in Europe. Since its launch in 2014, more than 170,000 units have been sold - mostly to customers who are driving a Lexus for the first time. The NX has thus also made a significant contribution to the growth of the brand in Germany.

  • Lexus presents new electric drive control DIRECT4 and concept vehicle with future design orientation

With the electric drive control DIRECT4, Lexus presents a new technology for the next generation of electric and hybrid vehicles. The system ensures precise, needs-based distribution of torque and braking force on all four wheels and thus forms the basis for outstanding performance, driving safety and handling properties.Last year Lexus unveiled the futuristic LF-30 concept vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show - as part and ambassador of the new global electrification strategy Lexus Electrified. The DIRECT4 drive control system now presented is a core technology of this strategy. The system regulates the torque distribution of the front and rear electric motors as well as the distribution of the braking force on all four wheels. In this way, the drive of the front and rear wheels is adapted to the respective driving conditions and the intentions of the driver.

  • Morgan looks to electrified future with XP-1 development vehicle

Morgan Motor Company is planning its electric future and sharing details of a new development vehicle that will act as the forerunner to all future electric Morgan sports cars. Referred to as ‘XP-1’, the experimental prototype will provide key information to the engineers and designers at Morgan as they embark on creating the company’s first production electric models. Developed over the last 12 months by Morgan’s team of engineers based in Malvern, Worcestershire, XP-1 is based on Super 3’s aluminium platform. The striking prototype is not intended for production but has been created to enhance thinking in several key areas including driving characterisation, powertrain development, in-house EV competence and training, and new feature ideation and testing. Following 12 months of design and build, XP-1 will now embark on a comprehensive testing programme during the next 18-24 months, undergoing continual evolution to test new technology and features.XP-1’s battery, motor and inverter combination represents Morgan’s first powertrain, internal combustion or battery electric. The powertrain, engineered specifically for XP-1, gives Morgan’s engineers complete control of calibrations that vary the throttle and regeneration level at different speeds, in order to create a range of driving modes featuring a mix of driving characteristics. To aid with the identification of suitable component combinations for the powertrain – both for XP-1 and future Morgan electric models – an in-house developed full vehicle toolchain has been created. This toolchain is key to modelling the compatibility and suitability of a range of different powertrain components, calculating the range prediction algorithm and simulating different scenarios that can help the company to benchmark against future requirements.Ensuring that future electric Morgan sports cars are lightweight – as they have been throughout the company’s 114 year history – is a key requirement. This weight requirement is fundamental in the decision for the company to create its own powertrain combination, working with key partners and utilising industry leading components. As such, XP-1’s weight is comparable to that of the production car it is based on.

  • 2023 Lexus RZ450e Interior Design

At the heart of the ‘Lexus Electrified’ vision is the need to offer existing Lexus models with electrified powertrains — something Lexus is committed to offering across lines by 2035. But Lexus also recognizes the need to create entirely new vehicles that push the boundaries of what Battery EVs look and feel like.In just a glance, the RZ 450e speaks volumes about its innovative design, inside and out. By replacing the traditional spindle grille with a BEV Spindle Body, the exterior design of the RZ expresses an aesthetic that ushers in a new generation of Lexus style. A unique roof spoiler tops the vehicle and reduces aerodynamic force, and, because there’s no engine to cool, the hood sits lower for an especially sleek silhouette.By far, the biggest challenge Lexus faced in designing an entirely new BEV was delivering on the Lexus Driving Signature experience with an entirely electric drivetrain. The 2023 Lexus RZ 450e accomplishes just that. With optimal placement of battery and motor, the RZ achieves the best weight distribution for responsiveness. The DIRECT4 all-wheel drive controls the front and rear drive force according to driving conditions for a serene sensation known as “The Natural.”Additionally, the new eAxle (electronic axle) system also adds to the Lexus Driving Signature by integrating the motor, transaxle and inverter for more cruise range and interior space.

  • Jaguar Land Rover prepare for advanced electrified and connected future with new testing facolity

Jaguar Land Rover has taken another step towards a new era of electrification and connectivity by opening a facility to test the next generation of vehicles for electrical and radio interference. The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) laboratory at Gaydon in the UK, will ensure future vehicles meet current and future legislation and quality standards for connectivity and electronics. New Range Rover Sport, which launched in May, was the first vehicle to undergo a bespoke testing programme at the in-house facility.A critical aspect of vehicle performance, EMC is the ability of electrical equipment and systems to function correctly in their electromagnetic environment. It works by limiting the unintentional generation, propagation and reception of electromagnetic energy to reduce the risk of unwanted effects such as electromagnetic interference.

  • Lexus Electrified Sport concept Trailer

Seven minutes and 14 seconds. That’s how quickly a flashy yellow Lexus LFA supercar covered a lap around the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife racing course in 2011—setting what was then a production-car record for the famed driving circuit. At the time, the performance-auto world was set afire by the news, but to the Lexus team that had honed the 500-plus-horsepower* Lexus LFA for a decade, this was no surprise. The limited-edition V10 Lexus LFA made numerous strides in performance-vehicle materials, aerodynamics, and agility, and much of its development influenced Lexus-model performance over the next 10 years—from F SPORT vehicles to Lexus motorsports.Fast forward to late 2021, when Lexus President Akio Toyoda revealed that Lexus will develop an all-electric sports car that inherits the driving taste, or “secret sauce,” of the LFA performance experience.
