A Russian court on Tuesday rejected an appeal by the US basketball star Brittney Griner to reduce the nine-year prison sentence handed to her for drug possession earlier this year. Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was convicted on August 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.
A judge said 31-year-old Brittney Griner illegally brought vape cartridges with cannabis oil into the country when she flew to Moscow earlier this year.
Basketball star Brittney Griner has been sent to a remote Russian penal colony and has started serving her sentence. The IK-2 penal colony is in the town of Yavas in the central region of Mordovia - a few hundred kilometres southeast of Moscow - known for its harsh climate. IK stands for a "corrective colony", the most common type of prison in Russia. IMAGES
