US scientists train rats to drive small cars to study benefits to brain

Description

Dr. Kelly Lambert's research lab at the University of Richmond, in the US state of Virginia, trains rats to drive small cars and rewards them with treats, exploring the potential benefits to the brain in the process. Watching rodents drive tiny custom-made cars is "kind of magical," says Lambert, a professor of behavioral neuroscience, adding that she wants to "make sure that it's not just a circus trick, that it is done in a scientific manner."

  • Cat Parasite Linked To Common Human Brain Cancer

The common parasite Toxoplasma gondii is spread to people through undercooked pork and occasionally domestic cats. Chronic T. gondii infections are linked to an increased risk of schizophrenia, lowered cognition, and behavioral changes like more risk-taking and aggression. Now, scientists say the parasite might have more insidious health effects than previously suspected. Gizmodo reports new research suggests a link between Toxoplasma gondii infection and an increased risk of gliomas, the most common form of brain cancer. The US sees 24,000 new cases of brain cancer annually, while 11% of Americans over age six carry T. gondii--upwards of 30 million people. So even if the connection is real, the chances of getting brain cancer as a result of chronic T. gondii infection are very low on an individual level.

  • Study Links Heart-Healthy Lifestyle With Decreased Likelihood Of Dementia

A new study says better heart health in middle age may help reduce a person's risk significantly for dementia later in life. Researchers at Sweden's Karolinska Institute studied 1,449 Finns enrolled in the Finnish Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging, and Dementia study. Adults with 'ideal' results on several cardiovascular health metrics were found to be 86% less likely to be diagnosed with dementia than those with lower scores. According to UPI, the metrics considered included smoking history, engagement in physical activity, body weight, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure. The findings suggest that maintaining lifelong heart health by not smoking, exercising regularly, and staying slim may reduce dementia risk later in life.

  • Study Shows There's An Actual 'Signature' In The Brain For Major Depression

Scientists have identified the brain's 'signature' for major depression. According to UPI, Japanese researchers used machine learning to ID distinct patterns of coordinated brain activity in people with major depressive disorder. Major depression is fairly easy to diagnose. However, the researchers say a better understanding of the brain networks associated with the disease could improve treatment. The new brain network signature could serve as a foundation for discovering brain network patterns associated with different types of depression. It could also reveal relationships between depression and other disorders.
