Firefighters and volunteers battle large wildfires day and night in the wetlands of Brazil's Pantanal, Mato Grosso state, where wildlife is severely threatened. Californian fisher Sarah Bates would ordinarily be working out at sea, but a ban on fishing salmon has confined her boat to the harbor. "It's a little demoralizing" she says, "not to have our fishery this year". The ban, which lasts until September, is aimed at helping the salmon recover, as a decades-long drought has reduced their river habitat and caused numbers to plunge.
Local residents in villages to the north of Cordoba are receiving water deliveries by truck after record temperatures and drought caused a drinking water basin to dry up.
