President Vladimir Putin says that Russia is being threatened by German tanks "again" as it was during World War II, warning that Moscow is ready to respond to aggression from the West. Speaking on the 80th anniversary of the Red Army's victory over Nazi Germany in the Battle of Stalingrad, Putin compares the Third Reich's invasion of the USSR to Germany's supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
The German government has greenlit the shipment of "Leopard 2" tanks to Ukraine, according to reports in the German weekly Der Spiegel.
Germany's foreign minister said on Sunday her government would not stand in the way if Poland wants to send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, in a possible breakthrough for Kyiv which wants the tanks for its fight against Russia's invasion. Ukrainian officials have been calling on Western allies to supply them with the modern German-made tanks for months - but Berlin has so far held back from sending them, or allowing other NATO countries to do so.
Former NATO director of policy planning told Euronews Fabrice Pothier thinks Germany will be making a mistake if it does not authorise Leopard 2 tanks to be provided to Ukraine
