A Russian court convicted imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny on charges of extremism and sentenced him to 19 years in prison Friday. Navalny is already serving a nine-year term on a variety of charges that he says were politically motivated.
In Moscow, a high-profile opposition activist has been convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison, on charges of treason -- the harshest sentence of its kind since Russia invaded Ukraine. Vladimir Kara Murza had been a vocal critic of Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin. And, his conviction is just the latest example of how the Russian govt is cracking down on dissent. Russia on Monday began the closed-door trial of jailed opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza, who faces more than two decades in prison on charges including treason for comments critical of the Kremlin.
