For his first outing as Justice Minister, Eric Dupond-Moretti visited the Fresnes prison. The famous lawyer and newly appointed member of the French government said he was "concerned about freedom, about the conditions of detention and about the working conditions of prison staff". Two suspected terrorists have been killed, including a suicide bomber, and seven arrested in a police raid in the Paris district of Saint-Denis. The police has labelled the operation as 'successful' although the identities of the people killed have not yet been revealed.
The Ukrainian govt is asking Western allies for fighter jets, to help repel the Russian army. Ukraine's defence minister Oleksiy Reznikov is in Paris today, to pressure the French govt on the issue. He is due to meet President Macron, and address parliament as well. We'll there been no announcement on fighter jets but (after their meeting) the French defence minister announced France will send 12 extra Caesar howitzers to Ukraine. And will send soldiers to Poland as well, to help train Ukrainian troops. FRANCE 24's Chief Foreign Editor Robert Parsons tells us more.
"The French Defence Minister [Sébastien Lecornu] is expected today (December 28) in Kyiv for the first time since the start of the war, he will meet his Ukrainian counterpart," FRANCE 24's Andrew Hilliar reported from Kyiv.
