The James Webb Space Telescope, an observatory with a €9.5 billion price tag, will allow scientists to peer further into the cosmos than ever before.
"We’re one step closer to uncovering the mysteries of the universe. And I can’t wait to see Webb’s first new views of the universe this summer!” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
It will be months before the first images get back to Earth.
The world's most powerful space telescope has blasted off into orbit, headed to an outpost 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.
NASA's SpaceX Crew-2 mission astronauts arrive at the Kennedy Space Center. Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, along with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet, are scheduled to head to the International Space Station on April 22.
