The World Health Organization has warned that intensive care units in some European cities could reach maximum capacity in the coming weeks if infections keep rising.
There were some 226 million domestic trips in China for the Lunar Year Holiday which came as the country lifted harsh zero covid travel restrictions for the first time in three years. Well the government insists the uptick in travel did not come with a spike in cases, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention even saying the current wave of infections is comin to an end. Between the 20th and 26th of January, the country officially reported around 6 300 new infections, down from over 12,600 the prior week. FRANCE 24's Beijing correspondent Yena Lee tells us more.
On Sunday, the seven-day moving average of new infections in France fell to 294,452, after setting a record high of just over 297,000 on Saturday. That was the first fall time since mid-November, when new infections averaged around 10,000 per day.
Omicron is "quickly becoming the dominant virus in western Europe and is now spreading in the Balkans", said Dr Hans Kluge, regional director for WHO Europe.
In France, the leader in rapid diagnostic tests, Biosynex, has hired 200 temporary staff to meet soaring demand, amid record case numbers and end-of-year holidays.
