Russian gas continues to flow into Europe after President Vladimir Putin threatened to cut off supplies unless they are paid in roubles, a demand rejected by European leaders as a breach of contract. However, Putin's decree does include a mechanism under which foreign buyers would set up special accounts at Gazprombank, which would convert foreign currency payments into roubles on their behalf. Plus, workers at an Amazon warehouse in New York could be heading for a landmark victory for organised labour following a vote on whether to unionise.
Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak, has said Moscow could cut off the flow of natural gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline which links the country to Germany, in retaliation for sanctions imposed on its economy. This latest threat comes as the United States is considering banning purchases of Russian oil. Novak warned such a move could push prices as high as $300 dollars a barrel. In early trading on Tuesday, the international benchmark Brent Crude was trading around $125.
The United States is preparing new sanctions targeting the regime of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, in coordination with the European Union, over the "inhumane facilitation" of migrant flows on its border with Poland. SOUNDBITE
The European Union will step up sanctions against Belarus, which on Monday denounced as "absurd" Western accusations that it was driving a migrant crisis that has left up to 4,000 people stranded in freezing forests on its border with Poland. EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to agree on further measures pressuring Belarus. FRANCE 24's European Affairs Editor Catherine Nicholson tells us more.
