The deadly strike on the Ahli Arab hospital in the Gaza Strip on the evening of 17 October is "totally unacceptable", says the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, insisting that the perpetrators must be held to account. Health authorities in Gaza say the strike on the hospital killed between 200 and 300 people. The World Health Organization has also condemned the deadly strike and demanded the immediate protection of civilians.
In an interview with FRANCE 24, the UN high commissioner for human rights expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, describing the situation as "apocalyptic". Volker Türk denounced "grave breaches of international humanitarian law" in Gaza, citing the Israeli blockade of the territory and the use of explosives in densely populated areas. Asked if Israel was deliberately targeting civilians in Gaza, Türk said "the facts speak for themselves".
"We can't turn away from what is evidently a moral failure in the face of the international community" says Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), after visiting the European hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza. Spoljaric's visit comes as Israel pushes its military operation south on a fourth day of fighting since the end of a week-long truce with Hamas.
The latest developments from the Israel-Hamas war.
The UN's human rights chief says the resumption of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip is "catastrophic", with the situation now "beyond crisis point", as Israel and Hamas resume fighting after a seven-day truce expired, with health officials in the Gaza Strip reporting fatalities within minutes.
