Death Toll Rises, As Residents Are Allowed To Return To Florida Keys

Description

On Tuesday, residents were allowed to return to parts of the Florida Keys archipelago that was slammed by Hurricane Irma's high winds and violent storm surge over the weekend, while the death toll continues to rise in the second major hurricane to strike the US this year. According to the National Hurricane Center, Irma, which tore through the Caribbean as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded, was downgraded to a tropical depression on Monday and is expected to begin dissipating on Tuesday evening. The massive storm prompted the evacuation of 6.5 million people in Florida, the largest evacuation in modern American history. Hurricane Irma killed 43 people in the Caribbean and at least 11 more in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
