President Barack Obama has authorized the deployment of up to 1,500 more U.S. troops for Iraq to advise and train in an effort to combat Islamic State. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
The United States will send more troops to Iraq, potentially putting them closer to the frontlines to advise Iraqi forces in the war against Islamic State militants. Mana Rabiee reports.
The United States announces sanctions on Iraqi low-cost airline Fly Baghdad, saying it provided assistance to Iran's Revolutionary Guards and proxies, while also targeting leaders of a pro-Iranian Iraq militia for sanctions. US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby tells reporters the sanctions are "designed to protect not only our financial system but our national security." SOUNDBITE
The United States will send troops to the international airport in Afghanistan's capital Kabul to pull out US embassy staff as the Taliban makes rapid gains, State Department spokesman Ned Price tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
Countries in Southern Africa have agreed to deploy forces to help quell a bloody jihadist insurgency wreaking havoc in northern Mozambique over the past three years. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) bloc "approved" the deployment of the "SADC Standby Force in support of Mozambique to combat of terrorism and acts of violent extremism in Cabo Delgado," the bloc's executive secretary Stergomena Tax says at the end of a one day summit.
