Pennsylvania's most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow and after seeing his shadow, predicts six more weeks of winter. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
It's that time of year again. The harshest part of winter may well be behind us and spring seems to be just around the corner. There's nothing like the good old American tradition of Groundhog Day to get us prepared. Groundhog Phil saw his own shadow at the culmination of the 131st Groundhog Day celebrations on Thursday, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania state. The tradition of the groundhog weather prediction began in Punxsutawney in 1887, when it was believed that a groundhog would be able to predict if the winter will continue for another six weeks or if the residents will see an early spring. According to the legend, if the groundhog is spooked by its own shadow and returns into his burrow, there will be a further six weeks of cold weather. However, if the sun fails to shine on the groundhog and he stays out in the open, then it is time for spring. Guess we will have to wait just a bit longer for spring showers and flowers.
