Following the violent attack on the US Capitol, federal officials launched the most extensive counterterrorism probe since September 11, 2001. Meanwhile, the heads of the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security--and the President himself--have remained essentially silent. But according to CNN, the Federal Bureau of Investigation means business. And FBI Director Christopher Wray doesn't mind saying so. Wray says the agency is monitoring 'extensive' online chatter about future protests and warned the men and women who wreaked havoc on the Capitol. It also exposed the reach of baseless conspiracy theories that have radicalized Americans to the point that they laid siege to their own Capitol.
Business Insider reports that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will change their annual New Year's Eve plans. They decided to leave Trump's Mar-a-Lago club before its lavish New Year's Eve party, an event that the Trump family attends annually. CNN reported that 500 people had already reserved tickets to the event, which have cost $1000 in the past. Guests had reportedly already started gathering at the resort and were told that Trump would attend. Instead Trump and Melania will spend New Year's Eve at the White House. The White House did not confirm the reason for their change in plans.
Democrat Sarah McBride has won the race for her state’s first Senate district. This means she will become the first openly transgender state senator in US history. McBride earned herself something of a national profile when she addressed the DNC in 2016. In her speech, she celebrated the chance to elect LGBT+ candidates across the country. McBride’s district is a solidly Democratic one, while Delaware at large is a reliably Democratic state. She joins several other trans leaders at a federal, national, and state level.
