Cathay Pacific feels China's pain

Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific Airways's first-half net profit has tumbled 82 percent sending shares down almost 8 percent. As Hayley Platt reports, slower Chinese economic growth and falling consumer demand for premium class seats on long-haul routes is partly to blame.

  • Cathay Pacific to cut jobs, close low-cost subsidiary

    Hong Kong, Oct 21 (EFE/EPA).- Hong Kong's flag carrier Cathay Pacific announced Wednesday it would lay off 5,900 employees and close low-cost subsidiary Cathay Dragon following corporate restructuring in response to the coronavirus's effect on aviation."The restructuring will enable the company to secure its future, so it can protect as many jobs as possible, whilst meeting its responsibilities to the Hong Kong aviation hub and its customers," the carrier said in a statement.   • Cathay Pacific traffic figures down 98% in September

    Hong Kong, Oct 19 (EFE/EPA).- Cathay Pacific is set to announce this week a restructuring plan that will include layoffs and pay cuts, in a bid to keep the company afloat amid the coronavirus pandemic.According to traffic figures released by the Airport Authority for September 2020, the airport handled 100,000 passengers and 10,535 flight movements, representing year-on-year decreases of 97.9 percent and 68.5 percent, respectively.
