Donald Trump's mug shot makes the front pages of US newspaper a day after the former president was arrested at a Georgia jail on racketeering and conspiracy charges and released on a $200,000 bond. Trump, who is accused of colluding with 18 other defendants to overturn the 2020 election result in the southern state, spent less than 30 minutes Thursday inside Atlanta's Fulton County Jail before leaving in a motorcade for the airport. First lady Melania Trump wanted to spread some seasonal cheer to sick children on Tuesday when she visited the Children's National Hospital. CNN reports she continued her annual tradition of visiting them, despite the coronavirus pandemic and record cases in Washington, DC. However, Mrs. Trump also broke the hospital's stated mask policy when she removed her mask to read a holiday book to children. While she arrived in the hospital's main atrium wearing a mask, she removed it when she took her seat in front of a tree. She did practice social distancing. However, the hospital's policy specifically requires all visitors to wear a mask.
Democrat Sarah McBride has won the race for her state’s first Senate district. This means she will become the first openly transgender state senator in US history. McBride earned herself something of a national profile when she addressed the DNC in 2016. In her speech, she celebrated the chance to elect LGBT+ candidates across the country. McBride’s district is a solidly Democratic one, while Delaware at large is a reliably Democratic state. She joins several other trans leaders at a federal, national, and state level.
