Animals Get Halloween Treats at Chester Zoo

Description

Animals at the Chester Zoo must have chosen treat over trick, as zookeepers left behind delicious breakfast meals for the critters stowed away in Halloween pumpkins, just in time for the celebration of the upcoming spooky festival. Zookeepers placed the treats in the animal habitats so the curious creatures could find and enjoy. Amongst the lucky animals were the Andean Bears, Red Pandas and Tortoises. The animals had unique reactions to the pumpkins. Whilst the fierce Black Jaguar played with the pumpkin in the water, the snake simply slithered past. The Meerkats however were most curious about the treats, as they crowded around the pumpkin, elbowing each other to find out what was inside This comes as part of Chester Zoo's Enchantment event which lasts right up until Halloween on Monday, the 31st October.

  • Tiny Orphaned Baby Antelope Hand-Reared by Chester Zoo Staff

This extremely cute little guy is a baby dik dik antelope named Thanos. Chester Zoo released footage of tiny Thanos on Thursday showing how zoo staff cared for the baby calf after the miniature animal tragically lost his mother not long after she gave birth. Staff members of Chester Zoo are taking care of the antelope and feeding him five times per day by hand. They will continue to hand feed the baby until it is able to feed itself independently. Thanos is just 7 inches tall and he's still getting accustomed to his surroundings. Dik dik antelopes are quite small in general, and grow to a maximum of around 16 inches high, 28 inches long, and about 13 pounds. The dik dik is native to eastern and southern Africa and is named after the alarm call of the females.
