Producer Bruce Timm Explains 'The Killing Joke's Struggled History

'The Killing Joke' is one of the definitive stories from the DC Universe, serving as an interpretation of The Joker's origin and the tragedy he inflicts upon Barbara Gordon. Producer Bruce Timm recently spoke at length about the trial and error process that went into making the brand new R-rated animated version possible. The first attempt occurred during the lukewarm reception of the 'Watchmen' movie, which shied away producers at the time from mature superhero storylines. The second attempt, as Timm puts it, "came up again and we even had started production with character designs and stuff. But then that horrible shooting at the Dark Knight Rises theater happened and everybody got nervous again about it, because of gun violence, so we put it back on the shelf."
