Supporters of Julian Assange arrive outside 10 Downing Street to call for his release after a UK court hearing over whether to grant the WikiLeaks founder a fresh appeal against his extradition to the United States to face espionage charges concluded in London. Washington indicted Assange multiple times between 2018 and 2020 over Wikileaks's publication of hundreds of thousands of secret military and diplomatic files on the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Images show Evan Gershkovich leaving court after his detention was extended by two months. Gershkovich, an American Wall Street Journal reporter is being held in Moscow on espionage charges which he denies. The court hearing was attended by representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Russia. He was arrested during a reporting trip at the end of March last year in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg and could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. IMAGES
Two members of the US Capitol Police have been suspended after welcoming pro-Trump rioters into the Capitol building on Wednesday. According to Business Insider, Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) said one of the officers took a selfie with a rioter. The other put on a 'Make America Great Again' hat and directed insurrectionists through the building. Ryan is on the Legislative Branch Subcommittee, which oversees spending on the Capitol Police force. He said one of the members may have been arrested. The attack Wednesday was the worst assault on the US Capitol since British forces burned it down in 1814. The rioters failed to stop the certification of electoral college votes for President-elect Joe Biden at the urging of President Donald Trump. The violence resulted in five deaths.
On Monday, Twitter's stock price tumbled as much as 12%. The company lost $5 billion from its market capitalization. The fall comes after Twitter permanently suspended President Trump's account. "We have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence," Twitter said. Trump has generated enormous publicity for the platform with his controversial and incendiary tweets over the past six years. He once boasted around 88 million followers before the ban.
