Investigators now believe the attack on the US Capitol last week was not just a protest that spiraled out of control. CNN reports that the belief, early in the probe, will demand significant investigation. Evidence uncovered so far, including weapons and tactics seen on surveillance video, suggests the attack was planned. The FBI says some participants at the Trump rally at the Ellipse, outside the White House, left the event early, perhaps to retrieve weapons. They're also looking at travel and communications records to determine if they can build a case that is similar to a counterterrorism investigation. Corruption prosecutors and agents are also engaging in the hunt for wrongdoers, thanks to their expertise in financial investigations. The FBI reported that it has received more than 126,000 digital tips from the public regarding the attack on the Capitol.
The FBI categorizes white supremacy underneath a broader category, called 'racially motivated violent extremism.' The National Defense Authorization Act required the FBI to report on US domestic terrorism, and how it and the Department of Homeland Security counter it. But according to Business Insider, the report, which was due in June 2020, is now four months overdue. The FBI says one part of the legally mandated report is being reviewed by other agencies; the other is incomplete. The agency blames the pandemic. However, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson says he thinks the delay is due to something else entirely. Rep. A US Postal Service employee in Kentucky is not only out of a job in the middle of a pandemic, he may soon have the Feds breathing down his neck. According to Business Insider, the man was terminated after authorities alleged he tried to discard over 100 absentee ballots. The ballots were intended for the Jeffersontown area of Jefferson County, and were found in a dumpster. None of the ballots were found marked or opened. They were returned to the Postal Service to be hand-delivered to residents on Thursday. The case has been accepted for federal prosecution by the US Attorney's Office.
