The scene is a common one in the La Vega neighborhood, which has turned into a micro-state dominated by organized crime gangs. COVID-19 restrictions tightened in China early this year, and that's led to a shortage of hideouts for criminals on the lam. CNN reports a fugitive who had been on the run for four years after allegedly stealing a corpse was running out of places to hide. Qiu Binhua was believed to have sold the body for a ritual, then fled to the western part of Inner Mongolia. There, officers had begun trying to contain the coronavirus by scanning QR codes of passers-by and setting up checkpoints. Without an ID card, police said Qui turned himself in, as he had no means of escape.
As the pandemic drives the US economy inexorably into the ditch, many freelancers, gig workers, and self-employed Americans find work is dwindling.
