'Star Trek: Discovery' Creators Comment On Jonathan Frakes' Spoiler

Description

The showrunners for Star Trek: Discovery have a rather diplomatic response to the spoiler that Jonathan Frakes let slip concerning an upcoming episode of the series. In September, Jonathan Frakes, the Star Trek: The Next Generation star turned director who will helm an upcoming episode of Star Trek: Discovery, mentioned at a convention that Star Trek: Discovery would be visiting the mirror universe first introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Mirror, Mirror” and further explored by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Enterprise. When asked if there was truth to Frakes assertion, showrunners Aaron Harbers and Gretchen Berg neither denied nor confirmed the spoiler, but gave something of a tease of things to come. “We’ve certainly been inspired by all of the series and...we are existing in the world of the other series,” Berg told Trek Movie. “So, there will be a lot of nods to things that seem familiar to fans of Trek.” Star Trek: Discovery is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, set ten years before Captain Kirk took command of the Enterprise. If the crew of the Discovery does encounter the mirror universe, that would make them the first Starfleet officers to make contact with the alternate dimension (Star Trek: Enterprise took place a century before Star Trek: The Original Series, but the episodes of Enterprise that dealt with the mirror universe were set entirely in that universe, with no contact between the mirror universe and the crew of the Enterprise NX-01). In the minds of many fans, that would be just one more matter of canon that Star Trek: Discovery needs to reconcile. Star Trek: Discovery debuted last week on CBS All Access. The first episode of the new series, “The Vulcan Hello,” aired on CBS and was watched by an audience of nearly 10 million. The premiere also led to a record number of CBS All Access sign-ups, and gained the attention of many internet pirates. A new episode of Star Trek: Discovery, titled “Context is for Kings,” will stream tonight on CBS All Access at 8:30 p.m. ET.
