Tesla once again took second place, but an increasingly crowded field is quickly encroaching. Autopilot outpaced competitors in capabilities and performance, but sank to the bottom for categories like driver engagement and clarity around safety. Japanese automaker Toyota presented a prototype autonomous concept vehicle, named e-Palette, at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Monday. e-Palette is a futuristic-looking box atop a next-generation battery electric platform, powered by Toyota's future autonomous vehicle tech. It will be available in three sizes, ranging from 13 feet to some 23 feet long. Apart from serving as a shared transport vehicle, the e-Palette can also spur e-commerce by bringing stores, offices and retail business directly to your doorstep.
Japanese manufacturing giant Panasonic unveiled Cocotto, the rolling, smiling robot who wants to help you raise your kids, at CEATEC, or the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies, in Chiba, Japan on Tuesday. The spherical robot is designed as an "educational companion" for children and is programmed to entertain kids but also to help them form good habits, like brushing teeth, eating, and going to the bathroom.
A new technology developed by Japanese tech company OMRON may have a solution to help prevent crashes caused by driver fatigue. OMRON's Onboard Driving Monitoring Sensor uses facial recognition and artificial intelligence to tell if a driver is falling asleep or texting while driving, and prompting them to pay attention and drive safely.
