A 7.5 earthquake that struck near Sand Point, Alaska, on Monday has triggered a tsunami warning. CNN reports the warning was for the Alaska Peninsula and South Alaska, by the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska. The earthquake's epicenter was recorded less than 60 miles from Sand Point, near the Aleutian Peninsula in southwest Alaska. It was followed by several aftershocks, including one of magnitude 5.8 and another of 5.9. Sand Point residents are under an evacuation order and are to head to higher ground away from the shoreline to wait out the tsunami threat. Residents of Homer could also be seen driving to higher ground after being given evacuation orders.
A very clever Utah woman may have saved her own life with some fast thinking and some simple non-verbal communication. Newser reports a local locksmith visiting the woman's home noticed something odd: She held up her hand with "911" written on it. Noticing that a menacing man was crowding the woman and controlling the use of her phone, the locksmith quietly signalled to the woman that he understood. After consulting with the FBI, he called local police. Deputies arrived later that day, at which point the woman quickly walked out of her home. Grand Eggertsen was the woman's ex-boyfriend, and allegedly barged into the house without her permission. He was soon arrested on charges of aggravated kidnapping, interruption of a communication device, and assault.
A plane flying from Melbourne to Australia's King Island crashed into a shopping centre in Essendon, a suburb of northern Melbourne on Tuesday, killing all five people on board, including the pilot, shortly after taking off from Melbourne's Essendon Airport around 9 AM local time on Tuesday. According to local police, The twin-engine Beechcraft B200 Super King Air is suspected to have suffered engine failure. The plane crashed into the back of a furniture store and a JB Hi-Fi store in the DFO shopping centre, leaving the parking area in flames and killing the pilot, identified as US citizen Max Quartermain, and all four passengers, who have also been identified as US citizens. Pilot Max Quartermain was the co-owner of Corporate and Leisure Aviation, the company which operated the plane. He had a perfect 38-year safety record. According to unconfirmed reports, there were no casualties on the ground. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the incident.
US President Barack Obama addressed hundreds of people in Dallas on Tuesday, at a memorial service for the five policemen who were killed at a protest organised in response to the fatal shootings of two black men last week.
Dallas Police Chief Officer David Brown gave a press conference, Monday, at which he explained the guidance he gave to use a bomb robot to kill the man who is believed to have killed at least five police officers. Rounds ripped through downtown Dallas, last Thursday, killing five police officers and wounding at least seven more. The suspect was identified as Micah Xavier Johnson who was killed by a detonation squad robot in the standoff with the police.
Hundreds of people gathered outside Dallas City Hall on Monday, for a candlelight vigil in the memory of the five police officers killed in the recent sniper shootings. Families and colleagues of the five officers who died - four Dallas Police officers and one DART officer - were in attendance at the vigil. Sniper rounds ripped through downtown Dallas, Thursday, killing 5 police officers and wounding at least 7 more.
