The historic town of Staufen im Breisgau is slowly breaking up before its residents' eyes. The cause is believed to be linked to the plugging of seven geothermal probes under the two town halls, which was done to heat and cool the buildings back in 2007. Besides broken streets and squares, 270 residents have reported damage to their homes. The town of Staufen is first mentioned in a document dating back 1,247 years and is famous as the city of Dr. Faust. The changes in the ground caused by the geothermal drilling threaten to severely damage an iconic and important part of German culture.
