In 1947, 21-year-old Princess Elizabeth married 26-year-old Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey, sparking joy and celebration in a country just recovering from World War II. Now 91 and 96 years old, the royal couple will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Monday. Officials said the milestone will be celebrated privately. The royal family will celebrate at the Windsor Castle. This is the first time in British history that a monarch will celebrate a platinum wedding anniversary.
