Registrar of the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals Abubacarr M. Tambadou praises "years of hard work, dedication and commitment" after war crimes judges upheld the genocide conviction of former Bosnian Serb military chief Ratko Mladic over the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, Europe's worst act of bloodshed since World War II. The UN tribunal in The Hague rejected Mladic's appeal against his 2017 life sentence for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity over the 1992-5 Bosnian war. SOUNDBITE

The mother of slain journalist James Foley, Diane Foley, says the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation welcomes the life sentence for El Shafee Elsheikh after the member of the notorious Islamic State kidnap-and-murder cell known as the "Beatles" was sentenced to life in prison by a US court for the deaths of four American hostages in Syria. "With today's verdict we finally have a bit of justice," she says outside the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia. SOUNDBITE
The 55-year-old disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for leading a decades-long effort to recruit and trap teenagers and women for sex, will appeal the sentence, says his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean. SOUNDBITE
Bobbi Sternheim, Ghislaine Maxwell's lawyer, says her client "will appeal this case," after she was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a New York judge for helping the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse girls.
