"We are calling on President Trump to demand that all protestors leave the U.S. Capitol and Capitol Grounds immediately," Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement. Thousands of pro-Trump supporters gathered in DC on Wednesday to attend a "March for Trump" rally to support the president's baseless claims that he won the election.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez does not think Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer should head the Democratic party. In new podcast with the Intercept on Wednesday AOC blasted Schumer and Pelosi. "We need new leadership in the Democratic Party." The criticism comes as stimulus talks between the Democratic leaders and their Republican counterparts are ongoing. According to Business Insider Ocasio-Cortez suggested intimated that she should lead the party.
The Washing Post is reporting that on Monday top Democrats approached the GOP's Mitch Connell with a secretive COVID-19 stimulus bill proposal. According to Business Insider the move came just before lawmakers unveiled a bipartisan $908 billion proposal. The new stimulus moderately increases proposed GOP spending. Speaker Pelosi said that the "private" proposal was also sent to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. On Tuesday, McConnell appeared to settle on a version close to the GOP's original demands for a small stimulus bill.
Trump and Pelosi are both hoping for an economic relief package after the election. "Right after the election, we'll get it one way or the other," Trump said on a podcast interview. "First and foremost the American people need help. They need real help," said Pelosi. However, there are still significant differences between the White House and Democrats. This is true on numerous issues, according to reports at Business Insider.
White House negotiations with Democrats over another pandemic aid bill have come to naught so far. Congress left town on Tuesday without passing another one, as virus cases surge across the nation, and the economic recovery threatens to grind to a halt. Business Insider reports that the prospect of more coronavirus aid is uncertain during a 'lame-duck session.' Such a session takes place in an even-numbered year, between the general election and the first session of the new Congress. The next deadline Congress faces is December 11. It must approve another spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. President Donald Trump supports another stimulus package. But his position has veered from cutting off relief negotiations to pressing for more money than Democrats.
