The new Lexus RX is the Japanese brand's poshest SUV ever. It's available in RX200t or RX450h models, and is aimed at competing with other premium SUVs like the BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. Its hybrid engine puts in in the crosshairs of the Porsche Cayenne hybrid, too. It promises low running costs and a luxurious interior, but does it deliver?
The upgraded Lexus UX 250h will hit the streets in summer 2022: the premium brand is giving its compact crossover SUV improved multimedia and connectivity functions as well as even more sportiness. Based on the proven GA-C vehicle architecture, driving pleasure and responsive handling are guaranteed anyway.Literally at the heart of the Lexus UX is a new multimedia system with an eight or 12.3-inch touchscreen, depending on equipment. The new display, which is 143 millimeters forward and closer to the driver, replaces the previous touchpad control. Users benefit from razor-sharp graphics - even in HD resolution on the 12.3-inch display - and a faster response to control commands thanks to higher processor performance. The standard cloud navigation provides road and traffic information in real time, in combination with the large screen also available as a hard drive navigation system.
The passenger compartment of the UX remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs for both the driver and passenger. Lexus showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection was good or adequate for both the driver and rear seat passenger. In both the side barrier and the more severe side pole tests, maximum points were scored, with good protection of all critical body regions. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric assessment of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking system scored full points in tests of its functionality at the low speeds at which many whiplash injuries occur, with collisions avoided at all test speeds and overlaps.
Lexus presented the new small crossover named UX. The new model joins the midsize NX and large RX in the Japanese brand’s line-up, and leaps head-first into an ever-growing premium compact SUV segment. A rival for Audi Q2 and BMW X2, will be offered with 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines as well as a hybrid powertrain.
The Mercedes GLC is a premium SUV aimed at stealing sales from the popular Audi Q5 and BMW X3, and also the more left-field Lexus NX and stylish Range Rover Evoque. It comes with a choice of diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid and, with stylish looks and an interior lifted from the C-Class saloon, it's sure to be a success. The Lexus RC has arrived to take on the best Germany has to offer in the form of the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes C-Class Coupe and Audi A5.
