Thousands Of Stores Closing


Business Insider reports that retailers across all sectors are fighting an uphill battle against falling brick-and-mortar sales. Analysts suggest companies need to be smart about closing and consolidating physical retail stores. The closures are part of an effort to bolster e-commerce sales and prevent further losses. Though the number of suggested closures varies widely sector. A recent UBS report found that all areas of retail could benefit from having fewer stores.

It's the coffee giant's response to two black men being arrested in one of their Philadelphia stores. Starbucks' CEO called the arrests "reprehensible" and has taken the blame for the incident.

    Walmart is closing 63 Sam's Club stores and laying off thousands of employees. The company abruptly shut down some of the stores on Thursday. The rest will close within the next couple of weeks. The closings shocked many customers and left them wondering what would happen to their membership fees, which cost $45 annually. The company told Business Insider that it would refund customers' membership fees for the affected stores.

    Sad news for Kmart shoppers. Business Insider reports that Sears Holdings, Kmart's parent company filed for bankruptcy on October 15. The company oversees 687 Sears and Kmart stores, and plan to shut down 142 of them before the end of 2018. The closure is due to lack of sales, which has handcuffed the company for years. This is also not the first time that Kmart has filed for bankruptcy. Business Insider explains, "In 2002, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection before merging with Sears in 2005." Before the crippling sales decline, there were thousands of Kmart stores across America.

    Business Insider reports that more than 7,100 stores are expected to close in 2019. On Friday, the discount chain Fred's said it plans to close 49 stores, bringing its total number of store closures this year to 312. Charlotte Russe, Family Dollar, and Chico's recently announced more than 1,100 store closures in a span of 24 hours. Payless has said it plans to close all of its 2,500 stores in what could be the largest retail liquidation in history.

    Macy's is closing more stores. After announcing nine store closings at the end of 2018, the retailer has added a further four to the list. According to Business Insider, these are part of a round of planned closures that were announced in August 2016.     Party City plans to close 45 of its 870 stores in 2019, the company said Thursday. The party supplies company also said it has secured a new source of helium that should help relieve pressure from a global helium shortage that has squeezed balloon sales. Party City made the announcements as it reported first-quarter revenue growth of 1% to $513 million and retail sales growth of 4%.
