The EQS SUV offers plenty of space, comfort and connectivity for up to seven vehicle occupants in its avant-garde, luxurious interior. Thanks to powerful electric motors, responsive 4MATIC all-wheel drive and an intelligent OFFROAD driving mode, this model is also capable of tackling light terrain with ease. At market launch, the model range comprises three variants: EQS 450 + and EQS 450 4MATIC each with 265 kW output, and the EQS 580 4MATIC with 400 kW.The new EQS SUV shares its long wheelbase (3,210 millimetres) with the EQS Saloon, but is more than 20 centimetres higher. The dimensions in detail: 5,125/1,959/1,718 millimetres. The interior dimensions benefit from these generous SUV dimensions and from the advantages of the purpose design tailored to the electric platform. The second row of seats can be electrically adjusted as standard. Up to four golf bags fit in the boot. A third row of seats with two additional individual seats and extensive comfort features for all passengers is available as an option.
The EQS is the first all-electric luxury saloon from Mercedes-EQ. With it, Mercedes-EQ is redefining this vehicle segment. The EQS is also the first model to be based on the modular architecture for luxury and executive-class electric vehicles. Fusing technology, design, functionality and connectivity, the EQS delights both drivers and passengers. The first models to come onto the market are the EQS 450+ rated at 245 kW (NEDC combined electrical consumption: 18.9-16.2 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) plus the EQS 580 4MATIC rated at 385 kW (NEDC combined electrical consumption: 19.6-17.6 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km). Fuel consumption acc. to WLTP: EQS 450+ combined electrical consumption 19.8-15.8 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions 0 g/km; EQS 580 4MATIC combined electrical consumption 21.4-18.3 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions 0 g/km.
The generous dimensions of the passenger compartment are partly due to the wheelbase, which is 22 millimetres longer than that of the preceding model (2961 millimetres).The E-Class is permitted to tow a braked trailer load of up to 2100 kilograms. The maximum unbraked towing capacity is 750 kilograms. Thanks to a tongue weight of up to 84 kilograms, the carrying of e-bikes is allowed.The illuminated surround of the radiator grille (optional extra) has two optical fibres behind the chrome strips. Light is fed into the glass-fibre bundles via LED modules.With two display styles (Classic and Sporty) and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service), the graphics of the screens can be individualised. The new MBUX is accompanied by a change in the presentation of the main icons on the displays. They are presented in a simpler way, and based on the colours used for smartphone tiles.Depending on the market, a communication module with 5G as the transmission technology is used. This mobile phone standard makes much faster data rates possible than LTE/UMTS.With the Digital Vehicle Key, the iPhone and Apple Watch become a car key. If the driver is carrying a compatible device, it can be used to start and lock the E-Class. Key sharing is also possible: The Digital Vehicle Key can be shared with up to 16 people. In those markets where Mercedes me connect services are available, Pre-installation for the Digital Vehicle Key forms part of the KEYLESS-GO Comfort Package. This equipment combination is available in the new E-Class from the Premium Package onwards.
The electric motor on the rear axle is particularly powerful due to its 6-phase operation: it has two windings with three phases each.To recuperate, the driver does not need to press the brake pedal; literally 1-pedal driving. Thanks to ECO Assist, the EQE SUV also decelerates automatically to a standstill when it detects vehicles ahead, for example at traffic lights.The charging system is located above the rear axle of the EQE SUV. It can be used to charge the battery from the public mains with single-phase or three-phase alternating current and an optional charging capacity of up to 22 kW.Mercedes-Benz issues a battery certificate for its high-voltage batteries, and thus a performance guarantee to customers: 10 years or a mileage of 250,000 kilometres with a defined residual capacity.The chassis of the new EQE SUV comprises a four-link suspension at the front and an independent multi-link suspension at the rear. Thanks to the comparatively short wheelbase of 3030 millimetres and the corresponding suspension tuning, it feels particularly agile and manoeuvrable even with the basic set-up.The AIRMATIC air suspension with ADS+ continuously adjustable damping is available as an optional extra. To increase ground clearance, the vehicle level can be raised by up to 30 millimetres. Rear-axle steering with a maximum steering angle of 10 degrees is available as an option.
The modular drive concept enables the EQE SUV to offer a wide range of maximum total drive outputs from 215 to 300 kW. Depending on the vehicle equipment and configuration, the European vehicles can achieve WLTP ranges of up to 590 kilometres2. In the EQE SUV, the lithium-ion battery consists of ten modules. The innovative battery management software, which was developed in-house, allows updates over the air (OTA). In this way, the energy management of the EQE SUV remains up-to-date throughout its entire life cycle.All EQE SUVs have an electric drivetrain (eATS) on the rear axle. The versions with 4MATIC also have an eATS on the front axle. In the 4MATIC models, the Torque Shift function ensures intelligent, continuously variable distribution of drive torque between the rear and front electric motors and thus the use of the most efficient eATS in each case. The modular drive concept enables high overall performance and a long range.To further increase the range, the electric motor at the front axle can be completely decoupled. This is carried out by what is known as the Disconnect Unit (DCU). The intelligent disconnection system works complete automatically, depending on the driving situation and the required output. At low loads the DCU switches into 4x2 driving mode, and both the electric motor and the relevant transmission at the front axle cease operation. This ensures that the drag losses otherwise normally experienced are largely eliminated.
