Google Starts Punishing AdBlock Users With Unskippable YouTube Video Ads

Description

Advert blocking extensions are becoming increasingly popular on the Internet, and websites that rely on adverts to fund their existence react in different ways. Some have added a tip jar, started a Patreon account, or simply show a message asking visitors to disable the ad blocker. Google, it seems, is taking more drastic action on YouTube and bypassing AdBlock completely. It’s also punishing users for having it enabled. Multiple reports have appeared on Twitter that even with AdBlock enabled, YouTube is now able to show video adverts. The tweak made by Google to allow the video adverts to work regardless is thought to effect all advert blocking extensions, not just AdBlock specifically. However, it is limited. It only works in Chrome for now, and only some users are experiencing the change.

Are you sure you need to post that? YouTube this week announced a new Community Guidelines feature meant to help clean up the vitriol on the comments section of its platform and help facilitate “respectful interactions.” Now, users on Android may see a pop-up before they post a comment on YouTube that may be hurtful. That prompt will ask them to “Keep comments respectful” and consider whether the comment they’re sharing “is appropriate.” YouTube itself notes that whatever systems and filters it has in place “are continuously learning and may not always get it right.”

  • Amazon Will Stop Selling Google and Apple Streaming Devices This Month

Amazon is a giant in e-commerce, and it’s throwing its weight around today. In an email to marketplace sellers, Amazon says it will stop sales of streaming devices from Apple and Google by October 29. They don’t work with Amazon Instant Video. According to the email, the sales ban covers the Apple TV, Chromecast, and Nexus Player. “Over the last three years, Prime Video has become an important part of Prime. It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion. Roku, XBOX, PlayStation and Fire TV are excellent choices.”
