Warner Brothers has announced that Mads Mikkelsen will replace Johnny Depp in the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise. Mikkelsen will take over the role of villainous dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. The movie, due for release on July 15, 2022, is currently in production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, near London. Depp was fired from the franchise after losing a libel case where a news outlet labeled him a wife beater.
Johnny Depp lost his libel case against a British tabloid that had labeled him a "wife beater" in an article about his ex-wife Amber Heard. Business Insider reports that Christian Dior has kept Depp as the face of its men's fragrance. But it is not airing ads in conservative markets. In May, Depp is set to go to trial again in a defamation case against Heard over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post suggesting he abused her. After that verdict, a branding expert said Depp's career would be "over."
Production on the third film in the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise has been delayed by Warner Bros. due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Stuart Beattie, who has worked as a screenwriter on 'Pirates of the Caribbean', hinted that the franchise will be rebooted without Johnny Depp.
Warner Bros. boss Kevin Tsujihara has vowed that the studio "knows what they need to do" to get 'Fantastic Beasts 3' "right" for fans of the wizarding franchise.
