CNN is reporting that Johnny Depp is stepping down from the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise. On Friday, Warner Brothers announced Depp will no longer play the villainous dark wizard at the center of the action in the "Harry Potter" prequels. In a statement Depp said he complied with Warner's request to resign from the project. Depp earlier this week lost a libel suit against the publisher of Britain's The Sun newspaper over the publication's claims that he was an abusive husband. Depp's biggest supporter, JK Rowling, had no comment. Rowling has stood by the troubled actor, even as details of heinous of Depp's abuse of actress Amber Heard emerged.

Johnny Depp lost his libel case against a British tabloid that had labeled him a "wife beater" in an article about his ex-wife Amber Heard. Business Insider reports that Christian Dior has kept Depp as the face of its men's fragrance. But it is not airing ads in conservative markets. In May, Depp is set to go to trial again in a defamation case against Heard over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post suggesting he abused her. After that verdict, a branding expert said Depp's career would be "over."
Production on the third film in the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise has been delayed by Warner Bros. due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Stuart Beattie, who has worked as a screenwriter on 'Pirates of the Caribbean', hinted that the franchise will be rebooted without Johnny Depp.
