Filipinos mark 48th anniversary of Martial Law declaration with protests

Quezon City, Sep 21 (EFE/EPA).- Hundreds of Filipinos took to the streets across the country on Monday to mark the 48th anniversary of the declaration of martial law under former president Ferdinand Marcos. At least 3,240 people were killed, 70,000 imprisoned and 34,000 tortured during the nine years (1972-1981) of martial law imposed by Marcos, according to Amnesty International.Marcos was toppled from power after a peaceful popular revolt and died in Hawaii (United States) in 1989, where he was living in exile since 1981.His widow and children returned to the country in 1992 to face more than 400 judicial proceedings, although no one has been convicted as yet.
