Specialized has unveiled its brand new lightweight road bike platform, the Aethos, which boasts an incredible frame weight of 588g in a 56cm size, and hits only 5.9kg for an overall build. The lightest production disc road bike we’ve ever seen, the Aethos has not been conceived for competition in the WorldTour, and it makes no attempt to stick to the UCI’s weight limit of 6.8kg. Yet, despite it’s 5.9kg overall weight, this bike is not simply an exercise in cutting grams. The new Canyon Aeroad has finally hit the market after being glimpsed in the WorldTour peloton throughout the latter part of the season, and claims to be the most aerodynamic bike on the market. Developed through CFD and wind tunnel testing at the GST the wind tunnel in Immenstaad in conjunction with SwissSide wheels, the Aeroad claims to be ‘the new benchmark in aerodynamic road bikes’ - saving 7.5 watts over the previous Aeroad. How much do bikes change from one generation to another? The Giant TCR Advanced SL 0 is Gian't flagship race bike, used by Team CCC and Greg Van Avermaet at WorldTour level. We compare it to the last iteration of the same bike, and look at how the design has changed. The Giant TCR goes back further than this, though. It is a piece of cycling history – the first frame to introduce a 'compact geometry', with a sloped top tube that increased stiffness, improved aerodynamics and reduced weight. Lining up against the likes of the Trek Émonda, Specialized S-Works Tarmac and Cannondale SuperSix, the latest TCR needs to boast some impressive numbers, and Giant doesn’t disappoint.
