'Paradise on Earth': Ghosts of N.Korea propaganda still haunts


Between 1959 and 1984, tens of thousands of Koreans and their Japanese spouses moved to North Korea from Japan with North's fantastical propaganda promising returning kin a "Paradise on Earth." But the reality they faced on arrival was a far cry from the propaganda.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took South Korean President Moon Jae-in Thursday to Mount Paektu, one of Korea's most important cultural and geological sites. CNN reports Moon's visit to the mountain was the realization of a dream for the South Korean leader.Moon said: "I wondered if I was ever going to have a chance but my wish has come true."

    These particles, called aerosols, are found in every environment on Earth, no matter what continent or ecosystem you're inhabiting. The image above, developed using NASA's Goddard Earth Observing System Forward Processing (GEOS FP) model, showcases the presence of aerosols in Earth's atmosphere on Aug. For instance, the long stretches of red most visible along western North America and in southern Central Africa represent the release of black carbon from wildfires and from agricultural burning, respectively. This aerosol can be stirred up by storms like Hurricane Lane, visible near the image's left-hand edge, and the typhoons Soulik and Cimaron, visible along the upper-right portion of the image, near South Korea and Japan.
