  • Chinese Court Sides With Qualcomm In Patent Dispute With Apple

According to Reuters, Qualcomm won a preliminary order from a Chinese court banning the sale of several older Apple Inc iPhone models in China. The injunction will also prohibit importing the iPhone 6, 7, 8, and X to China. The chipmaker sued Apple over two patents which are used in smart devices. But instead of violating hardware patents, Qualcomm accuses Apple of using two software patents. The first patent covers a software feature for editing and resizing photos on a phone, while the second involves using a touchscreen to manage apps. Qualcomm general counsel Don Rosenberg said the injunctions are now effective, adding that they apply to specific features, and not Apple's operating system.

  • Nest Smart Home Devices Went Dark For 3 Hours During Network Failure

Nest smart home devices were offline for three hours starting before midnight on Wednesday, May 16. Door locks and thermostats were functional but only with manual control. Nest mobile apps and internet access to devices were disabled. It’s uncertain, however, if Nest’s alarm systems were functional during the dark period. Nest hasn't issued a formal statement yet about the network failure. Thankfully Nest devices include built-in physical overrides. Were it not for the overrides, people might have been locked out (or in) of their own homes.

  • Police Launching Stingray Attacks to Gather cell Phone Data

Over the past few weeks, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been picking up some headlines because they’ve started executing so-called “stingray” attacks. These work, essentially, by mimicking a cell tower and forcing nearby targets to connect to the bogus tower instead. Once that’s done, an officer has a range of options depending upon exact context, but in many cases, they can launch large searches across broad areas and force devices in the target area to yield identifying information, like a phone’s hard-coded serial number. And these collect from many, many users at once. The FBI and other bureaus have been eager to bite into the trove of data we have on our phones.

  • Apple Siri Speaker News And Rumors

After first appearing on phones, voice assistants entered the home in a big way with the Amazon Echo, a speaker that was equipped with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. Tech Radar has reported that while Apple has had a voice assistant, Siri, on its phones for some time now, it has been left behind when it comes to smart speakers. Competitor Google brought its own voice assistant to dedicated hardware with the Google Home speaker last year.

  • Customs Agents Search Cell Phones Without Warrant

Even though a 2014 Supreme Court decision ruled the need for a warrant to search cell phones, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s airport security continued to seize cell phones. The Ninth Court of Appeals ruled that immigration authorities need “reasonable suspicion” to perform electronic device searches back in 2013. Privacy rights activists say that the law isn’t keeping up with technology and this is a violation of civil rights. The security guards have been looking through people’s text messages and downloading the entire contents of their phone onto a government system.

Wireless charging your iPhone X and iPhone 8 is only the beginning, as Apple just bought a small, but important wireless charging company today. ‎It now counts PowerbyProxi among the seven small firms it has bought so far in 2017, one that Samsung had invested $4 million into. The team will join Apple "to create a wireless future." Apple is already planning to expand beyond the Qi standard its technology is based on with the AirPower. It can charge multiple devices at once.
