Nicaraguans celebrate traditional Griteria festival with messages against Ortega

Description

Managua, Dec 7 (EFE) .- Nicaraguans held on Saturday the annual traditional 'hue and cry' (Griteria) during the Marian festivities in Managua, this year with the altars adorned in white and blue in reference to the protests against President Daniel Ortega. On Dec 7 each year, Nicaragua celebrate the traditional 'Griteria' in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. However, this year's celebration saw various Virgen Mary´s altars in Managua adorned in blue and white, the colors that the opposition used in protests against President Daniel Ortega, with many bottles of water put in front. The bottles are a symbol for the Nov. 15 detention of 16 people, two of them from the Blue and White National Unity which joins the Opposition to President Daniel Ortega, when they were taking water to a group of mothers on hunger strike at Saint Michael Church in Masaya town.According to the Opposition, at least 161 people have been imprisoned for 'thinking in a different way and trying to exercise their right to protest, their right of freedom of speech and even their freedom of religion'.(Camera: RENÉE LUÇIA RAMOS).FOOTAGE SHOWING A RELIGIOUS CEREMONY HELD AS PART OF THE LA GRITERIA FESTIVAL IN MANAGUA, NICARAGUA.
