Col de l’Azelier is one of nearly 200 French ski resorts to shut since the 1970s. But e-biking and hiking are bringing tourists back.
French alpine resorts in the Haute-Savoie may be deprived of downhill skiing this season due to the ongoing lift closures but plenty of alternative activities are on offer in a bid to keep tourism going despite the virus. In Les Contamines-Montjoie, Héléna, Manon, Charles and their parents declare themselves delighted to "discover other sports and other ways of living in the mountains".

A few dozen people take part in a rally at Ax-les-Thermes in southwestern France to protest against the French government's decision to close ski lifts in resorts over the Christmas season. IMAGES
The protest comes as the French government proposes "random border checks" to be put in place over the holiday season targeting people trying to get to foreign resorts.
