President-elect Joe Biden has assembled what environmentalists are calling an “all-star” team to lead his government’s efforts to curb climate change and reverse the Trump administration’s astoundingly pro-polluter legacy. Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.), one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress and a strong supporter of the Green New Deal movement, would replace a former oil lobbyist if the Senate confirms her as head of the Interior Department.
On Sunday, GOP Sen. John Barrasso said Joe Biden's cabinet nominees are going to face a hard road towards confirmation. According to Politico Barrasson said a Republican-controlled Senate should not expect an easy pathway to confirmation. "It's not going to be a garden party," he said. Barrasso said Biden's nominees will have to "run the gauntlet" towards confirmation. He said Biden's selections resembled a "third term of the Obama administration."
Drew Angerer/Getty Images Dr. Jill Biden, President-elect Joe Biden's wife and the future first lady, will push for debt-free community college, according to a close source who spoke with Yahoo News. "We have often talked about community colleges as the unsung heroes," Martha Kanter, an under secretary of education during the administration of former President Barack Obama, told Yahoo News. While serving as second lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017, Biden taught English at Northern Virginia Community College. Biden plans to return to teaching as first lady, which would make her the only woman in the role's 231-year history to have a full-time job while assuming the duties of the position, according to USA Today.
The widow of the late Republican Sen. John McCain believes her husband 'would be very pleased' that Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump on Election Day. Although a lifelong Republican like her husband, Cindy McCain endorsed President-elect Biden. Business Insider reports McCain says she hopes Trump concedes gracefully, as did her late husband conceded to then-president-elect Barack Obama in 2008. The late senator was widely praised for his moving concession speech delivered on Nov. 5, 2008, just a day after Obama's projected election win. I really truly hope ... that this president stays on the right side of history. But also with all that said, does what's right for the country. Cindy McCain Widow of the late Arizona Sen. John McCain Trump has refused to concede and has floated baseless theories to justify nullifying the results. He also claimed he had already won the election, despite trailing Biden and not accounting for the unprocessed ballots throughout the country.
President Donald Trump is the first president in polling history never to have received a positive job approval rating while in office. In exit polls Tuesday, CNN reports Americans gave Trump an approval rating of 47%. Senior CNN commentator David Axelrod notes that as Trump blames the media and voter fraud for his loss to Joe Biden, Trump should look in the mirror, instead. Axelrod argues that Trump had planned to be re-elected on the strength of the economy, which caused him to downplay the seriousness of COVID-19. As the pandemic picked up speed, Trump used it to inflame his base even more, and divide the country even further. By denying science, however, he torpedoed the US economy, not to mention contributing to hundreds of thousands of deaths.
