Law unto themselves? Social media block Trump amid calls to regulate Big Tech

Twitter permanently banning Donald Trump's account, Facebook suspending it through Inauguration Day, and other social media jumping on the bandwagon of curbing false claims of a stolen election. For four years, the US president has been spreading disinformation from the Oval Office.

The member of the far-right extremist group 'Texas Freedom Force' threatened to kill his son and daughter if they told the FBI he had taken part in the riot. Guy Reffitt Business Insider reports Riffitt separately told his daughter he'd 'put a bullet' through her phone if she posted about him on social media.

CNN reports a growing number of businesses suddenly want very little to do with Trump after he incited a mob of his supporters to attack the Capitol. Twitter and Facebook banned Trump indefinitely, and Stripe is no longer processing credit card payments for his campaign. Shopify stopped operating online stores for the Trump Organization and the campaign and the PGA is pulling a major golf tournament from a Trump resort. It's also unclear which, if any, banks will want to loan money to the Trump Organization.

    After Joe Biden was named US President-elect, President Donald Trump's re-election campaign swung into action, determined to reverse the outcome. One of its efforts was to set up a 'voter fraud hotline' at the campaign's headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. But according to Business Insider, the hotline has now been closed, after a TikTok trend led to a deluge of prank calls. TikTok users soon began uploading videos of themselves calling with fake claims and recording the reaction of the operator. The hotline has since been replaced with an online form. The inbox for the form has already been flooded with lewd images, the entire Bee Movie script, and more.

    Facebook will begin removing all content that mentions the phrase "stop the steal". This comes a full 69 days after Election Day, according to reports at CNN. There have been continued attempts to organize events against the outcome of the US presidential election. Many of them have lead to violence, like the terror attacks on the Capitol recently. "We're taking this additional step in the lead up to the inauguration," says Guy Rosen, Facebook's VP of integrity. "Stop the steal" has become popular among Trump supporters that believe false claims of election fraud.

  • Twitter Drops 10% After Banning Trump

    On Monday, Twitter's stock price tumbled as much as 12%. The company lost $5 billion from its market capitalization. The fall comes after Twitter permanently suspended President Trump's account. "We have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence," Twitter said. Trump has generated enormous publicity for the platform with his controversial and incendiary tweets over the past six years. He once boasted around 88 million followers before the ban.
